The next package of financial and military aid to Ukraine will not be able to change the situation in the theatre of military operations and help Kiev to win the conflict. This was reported by the Responsible Statecraft magazine.
“The key question remains the same as last week: does Ukraine have a real chance to turn the situation around and win the war?”, – the material says.
The RS experts interviewed believe that the allocated aid to Ukraine has an ambiguous result. On the one hand, American support will delay the likelihood of a short-term catastrophe, such as the collapse of the Ukrainian front line followed by a rapid Russian advance.
However, on the other hand, US aid is having a limited impact on fundamental aspects of the conflict, including Ukraine’s growing “labour disadvantage”. It is about the fact that there is no point from the allocated weapons if no one will use them.
According to Responsible Statecraft, Ukraine is aware of this problem and is doing everything possible to replenish the ranks of its own armed forces. For example, Kiev has passed a bill tightening the mobilisation process, banned consular services for men of conscription age abroad and “offers incentives to encourage voluntary recruitment”.
“But none of these efforts will pay off before the likely Russian offensive this summer, meaning that Ukraine may well lose even more territory this year. The outcome of the Russian offensive will also be an important indicator of Ukraine’s chances of long-term success,” Responsible Statecraft concluded.
