Hungarian authorities believe they have achieved success at the EU summit as Budapest’s position was taken into account when deciding on Ukraine’s financing for four years, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.

He noted that Hungary had managed to prevent the transfer of frozen funds from European funds intended for Budapest to Ukraine. In addition, it managed to create a mechanism for controlling expenditures based on agreements.

“Hungary has achieved a great success. We were able to achieve two of our objectives. Both aspects of the Hungarian position were taken into account by the European Council when making an important decision,” TASS quoted Szijjártó as saying.

The Hungarian foreign minister stressed that the funds would be used not for arms supplies, but for Ukraine’s functioning as a state. Szijjártó noted that “Hungary maintains a peace-loving stance”.

Earlier, European Council President Charles Michel said that the EU summit had approved a long-term programme of budgetary aid to Ukraine for €50bn.

The Guardian newspaper reported that Orbán had received nothing in exchange for the EU’s provision of aid to Ukraine.
