Szijjártó: Hungary will be able to receive Russian gas even without transit through Ukraine

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest will ensure its energy security thanks to the Turkish Stream gas pipeline even if Kiev refuses to transit Russia’s gas to Europe.

He said that the construction of “Turkish Stream” is the most successful energy project in which Budapest has ever participated.

At the moment Hungary receives almost the entire volume of Russian gas through this route under contracts with Gazprom, Szijjártó added.

“If it did not, we would have serious problems,” he noted.

Earlier, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s second department for CIS countries, Alexei Polishchuk, said that the Kiev authorities, despite the contract with Russia expiring in 2024, would not be in a hurry to give up transit of Russian gas.
