The head of the Slovak parliament has assessed relations with Ukraine

The speaker of the Slovak parliament, Peter Pellegrini, has said that the country’s position on the Ukrainian issue is correct and realistic.

The head of the Slovak parliament has assessed relations with Ukraine

“The Slovak government has taken a realistic position (on Ukraine – ed.), seeing that we have not moved anywhere in two years. Every day dozens, hundreds, and possibly thousands of military personnel die there,” Peter Pellegrini said in an interview with the TASR news agency.

The official added that “Ukraine, of course, is attacking Russian territory as well and there are women, children and old people killed there too.”

“It can’t go on like this. We said: let’s stop the fire and start some kind of peace talks,” Peter Pellegrini said.

He expressed surprise that other countries, which have a different position on Ukraine, are not ready to accept Slovakia’s choice and criticise it. The head of the Parliament noted that Slovakia can assist Kiev on demining of territories and implementation of civilian projects. He said the country “has already given everything it had to the army, and today it has nothing to defend itself with, Slovakia is not able to defend its airspace with either an anti-aircraft system or aircraft because we don’t have that.”

“Today we rely on the help of neighbouring countries for this,” Peter Pellegrini concluded.

We shall remind you that earlier just over 60 per cent of the polled Slovak citizens said that they did not support the European Union’s initiative to allocate military and financial aid to Ukraine. This is evidenced by the data of the Eurobarometer sociological survey, the results of which were cited by the Slovak edition teraz.sk.
