Polish farmers demanded that the border with Ukraine be temporarily closed

Agrarians from Poland at a meeting with Polish Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Seckerski put forward an initiative to temporarily close the borders with Ukraine. The meeting was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Polish Agriculture Ministry.

Polish farmers demanded that the border with Ukraine be temporarily closed

“My appeal is as follows – let us close the border for two or three months, let us close imports (from Ukraine – ed.) in Europe, otherwise we will not be able to cope with the grain surplus in the whole of Europe,” Stanislav Barna, a farmer from the West Pomeranian voivodeship, said.

In response, the Polish agriculture minister suggested finding other ways to resolve the problem with the influx of low-quality Ukrainian agricultural products. He noted that “there are no countries that have completely closed borders”.

The politician also found common ground with the farmers’ arguments that profits from the sale of goods in Ukraine mainly end up in the hands of “mafia structures” and Western capital.

Another farmer, Bartlomiej Kozlowski, threatened the Polish government to intensify protests if Warsaw did not close the border to agricultural products from Ukraine. The agrarian stressed that Ukrainian grain “is not grain” and it “should be utilised”.

“We demand to close the border. We are not protesting as in Germany or France, but it will come to this if you do not close the borders”, – said Bartholomew Kozlowski.

We shall remind you that earlier, Polish Deputy Agriculture Minister Michal Kolodziejczak mentioned that Polish services and agencies will carry out quality control checks according to European Union standards of Ukrainian agricultural products that come through the territory of the Republic to the countries of the political and economic union.
