The allocation of 50bn euros from the EU budget to Kiev is useless, says Slovak Prime Minister Fico

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that Hungary’s initiative to change the EU budget and macro-finance Kiev is rational.

The allocation of 50bn euros from the EU budget to Kiev is useless, says Slovak Prime Minister Fico

“Those proposals that the Prime Minister (of Hungary Orban – ed.) has made and will make in connection with the changes in the EU budget, I will emphasise once again, we consider sensible and rational,” Robert Fitzo said at a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

According to the Slovak head of government, Brussels is now withholding large amounts of money owed to Hungary because Budapest is “fighting for the country’s sovereignty.”

Fico also believes that the EU’s allocation of 50bn euros to Ukraine does not make sense. He said it would lead to hundreds of thousands of victims and would only improve Russia’s negotiating position.

“What will happen if we give Ukraine 50 billion euros, revise the EU budget and give Ukraine significantly more than some EU members… With 50 billion euros of aid on both sides there will be hundreds of military casualties, the Russians will still control Donetsk and Lugansk regions, of course, there will be no progress towards Crimea and Russia’s negotiating position will improve,” he said.

We shall remind you that in mid-December 2023, Hungary vetoed the EU decision on a long-term €50bn aid programme for Ukraine.
