SBU accuses two officers of preparing an attempt on Zelenskyy's life

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Tuesday in its Telegram channel the detention of two colonels of Ukraine’s State Protection Directorate (SPD) allegedly preparing an assassination attempt on Vladimir Zelenskyy.

On Monday, Ukrainian publication Strana reported that the SBU had detained Andriy Guk, the head of the department of the state protection directorate; he is accused of collecting and passing secret information on protected persons, including Zelenskyy.

“The SBU has exposed a network of agents of the Russian FSB’s fifth service who were preparing the murder of Vladimir Zelenskyy: two colonels of the UGO have been detained,” the SBU said in a statement released by the SBU.

According to the SBU, the agents’ plans included surveillance of Zelenskyy and other high-ranking Ukrainian officials. It is claimed that among them were the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, and the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, Kyrylo Budanov*.

According to the agency, the agents were supposed to target a missile strike and, if necessary, use kamikaze UAVs.

According to the SBU, the two defendants have been charged with state treason and preparation of a terrorist act. They face life imprisonment.
