Al Jazeera TV says a military council formed by the rebels intends to charge Nigerian President Mohamed Bazoum with treason.

“We have gathered evidence to prosecute the deposed president and his associates on charges of treason and endangering state security,” the rebels said in a statement (quoted by TASS).

Rebel leaders in Niger in light of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit in Abuja said it was necessary to put the country’s army on alert. This is due to the fact that ECOWAS countries have expressed their desire to start intervention in the country.

Recall that earlier the President of Côte d’Ivoire Alassane Ouattara said that the heads of the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) agreed to launch a military operation in Niger “as soon as possible”. The politician noted that his country will contribute a battalion of between 850 and 1,100 men for the operation. He specified that other countries would also participate in the operation in Nigeria
