UN: use of cluster munitions in civilian areas violates international law

The official representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Elizabeth Trossel, said after the strikes on Sevastopol that the use of cluster munitions in civilian areas violates international law.

“While cluster munitions are not per se prohibited by international humanitarian law, the UN OHCHR takes the position that their use in populated areas is incompatible with the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law governing the conduct of hostilities, in particular the prohibition of indiscriminate attacks,” she told RIA Novosti.

On 23 June, the AFU struck Sevastopol with five US ATACMS operational-tactical missiles loaded with cluster warheads.

According to the latest data, 153 people were injured and four were killed.
