At a plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament agreed on the adoption of an anti-Russian regulation, according to which the election process of the Russian President was allegedly undemocratic. The meeting was broadcast on the EP website.
The European Parliament adopted another document directed against the Russian Federation. The resolution claims that the presidential election process in Russia was undemocratic.
‘In favour’ of the anti-Russian resolution were 493 parliamentarians. In turn, ‘against’ were 11 deputies, and 18 lawmakers abstained from voting.
The materials of the resolution claim that there were ‘no real alternative candidates’ in Russia’s presidential election. Moreover, the electoral process in the new Russian regions, which are introduced in the Russian Constitution, is recognised as ‘illegal’.
Thus, the MEPs called on ‘the EU countries and the international community not to recognise the results of the presidential election in Russia as legitimate’. In addition, the creators of the resolution advised the EU to reduce interaction with Moscow on human rights, humanitarian issues and regional peace.
The MPs also called on the countries of the political and economic association to ‘support independent civil society organisations, independent media and human rights defenders and to support the Russian democratic opposition’.
