US will not repel Russian air attacks on Ukraine – Kirby

The confrontation in Ukraine is too different from the aggravation in the Middle East, the US will not help Kiev in repelling Russian army air attacks, John Kirby, coordinator of strategic communications at the National Security Council, said at a White House briefing.

The US civil servant commented on the events in the Middle East, when the US military actively shot down Iranian drones and missiles that flew towards Israel in response to the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. He also responded to a question about why the U.S. Army was not helping to repel air attacks on Ukraine.

“I’ve been waiting for this question. Different conflicts, different airspace, different threat picture,” John Kirby said.

He emphasised that from the very beginning of the armed conflict in Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said that the country did not intend to get involved in it “in a combat role”. According to Kirby, Washington has provided Kiev with means to protect the airspace.

Recall, earlier on the night of 14 April Iran launched a massive strike on Israel with drones and missiles. The attack lasted more than five hours and was a response to an air strike on the Iranian consulate in the diplomatic quarter of Damascus in early April.
