Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abderrahman Al Thani has said that the Middle East conflict has revealed a serious “chasm” between the West and the East.
According to Mohammed bin Abderrahman Al-Thani, the conflict in the Middle East between the Palestinian Hamas movement and Israel has demonstrated a serious gap in the relations between the West and the East. The Qatari diplomat emphasised that the Middle East confrontation has revealed the ambivalent position of the Collective West on similar processes in the world.
“The conflict in the Gaza Strip has revealed a huge gulf between East and West, it has also revealed double standards on similar international issues. When those who oppose the occupation in one case remain silent and do not call for joint international action to end the violence and occupation in this case,” Qatar’s Foreign Ministry told the opening of the Doha Forum.
The Qatari diplomat expressed regret that “some find justification for attacks on civilians and find them acceptable.” According to the Qatari foreign minister, certain representatives, most likely of the Collective West, look at the Middle East conflict as a religious conflict, although it “has always been and remains linked to occupation, around the denied right to self-determination.”
The Qatari Prime Minister emphasised that the processes that are taking place in the Gaza Strip encourage people around the world to “ask legitimate questions” about the nature of the current world order and its effectiveness in the context of conflict avoidance.
The Qatari Prime Minister’s statement was a reaction to the decision of the United States representatives in the UN Security Council. Washington, as a permanent member of the international organisation, used its veto power on a draft resolution that envisaged an immediate halt to hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Britain abstained from voting, while the other 13 members of the Security Council were in favour. At least 97 members of the international organisation took part in the drafting of the document.
Recall, earlier the Permanent Representative of China to the UN Zhang Jun said that the United States constantly speaks about the need to respect human rights, but at the same time the American representatives veto the draft Chinese resolution, which suggests a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The Chinese diplomat emphasised that “all of this once again demonstrates what double standards are”.
