NATO commander in Europe says no notable successes of Ukrainian Armed Forces

NATO commander in Europe Kavoli says lack of notable successes in AFU offensive

The commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, General Christopher Kavoli, has said that the Ukrainian counter-offensive has not yet achieved significant successes and that the Ukrainian army is facing difficulties because of Russian defences, the Financial Times reported.

According to the newspaper, Cavoli said this privately last week. He also noted that Russian forces have a “mass advantage.”

According to a high-ranking European diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, the outcome of the counterattack will affect Western countries’ attitude towards Kiev. “Funding, support, political involvement… and, most importantly, the peace talks that are coming, whether we like it or not,” he added.

The Ukrainian offensive in the southern Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Artemivsk directions began on 4 June. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 27 June that Kiev has lost 259 tanks and 780 armoured vehicles since the so-called counter-offensive began, while on the Orekhovo direction alone it lost 41 tanks and 102 armoured vehicles in the past week. Putin earlier said that Ukrainian forces were suffering heavy losses in the offensive and had no success in any direction.
