New York Times: Europe’s energy sector is still heavily dependent on Russian nuclear power
Europe`s energy sector is still heavily dependent on Russia`s nuclear energy, the New York Times said.
It said it was easier for the European Union to find a replacement for Russian oil and gas because of the restrictions than to give up its “dependence” on Rosatom. The newspaper writes that in this regard Russia is still crucial in Europe’s energy supply and there is little support in the region for proposals to impose sanctions against Rosatom. Furthermore, it notes that for countries with nuclear reactors built with Russia, dependency is already deeply entrenched.
“A worldwide rejection of the Russian nuclear industry would be a severe blow. The nuclear supply chain is extremely complex. Establishing a new one would be expensive and take years,” the paper adds.
On 25 February, the European Union introduced a new, tenth package of sanctions against Russia, which expanded export-import and personal restrictions, as well as new bans on Russian media. The European Commission has estimated the new package of sanctions at 11.4 billion euros.
At the same time, the Hungarian Cabinet of Ministers said that the sanctions against Russia’s nuclear energy are not included in the tenth package “in any form”. At the same time, the media reported that a number of countries, including France, Hungary and Bulgaria, are blocking the imposition of European Union sanctions against the Rosatom corporation.
The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West started to put on Russia several years ago and continues to intensify. Moscow has noted that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of sanctions against Russia. The West itself has repeatedly argued that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective.
“Rosatom is ready for increased Western pressure on its foreign projects and will find ways and mechanisms to implement them, ROSATOM CEO Alexei Likhachev said earlier.
