Media: experts warned Biden about another crisis in the Gaza Strip

Experts warned the administration of US President Joe Biden in advance about the next crisis between Israel and Palestine, but the White House did not immediately heed their words, according to the American Internet publication Axios, citing diplomatic sources.

According to him, experts warned the White House at the end of April that the postponement of elections in Palestine and protests around the eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah region in Jerusalem may portend another crisis.

“At first, the White House did not take these warnings too seriously. The conflict between Israel and Palestine was still not a priority”, – the newspaper writes.

The Israeli security cabinet on Thursday night unanimously accepted Egypt’s initiative for a bilateral ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone without any strings attached. An adviser to the head of the Hamas Politburo, Taher An-Nono, said the movement would observe the ceasefire if Israel adhered to it. The ceasefire came into effect at 2.00 on Friday night.

The situation on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip escalated on the evening of May 10. Since the beginning of the escalation, about 4,340 missiles have been fired from the Palestinian enclave, according to the Israeli army, about 640 of them fell inside the enclave, Israel estimates the effectiveness of the Iron Dome missile defense system at 90%. According to the latest information, 12 people died in Israel, more than 50 were seriously injured. The number of Palestinians killed in retaliatory Israeli airstrikes has reached 243, including 66 minors. 1.9 thousand people were injured.
