The leadership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation does not consider it possible for Ukraine to join NATO, nor even an invitation with a time delay. This was stated by US permanent representative to the alliance Julianne Smith at an online briefing.
US Permanent Representative Julianne Smith has said that NATO is not ready to invite Ukraine to the alliance.
‘To date, the alliance has not reached the point where it would be ready to offer Ukraine membership or an invitation,’ Smith said.
The Permanent Representative noted that NATO maintains its position that Ukraine will one day become a member of the organisation.
Smith also said that during the upcoming NATO ministerial meeting, the alliance members will discuss the continuation of assistance to Kiev and the possibility of increasing it ‘depending on Ukraine’s requests’.
We shall remind you that earlier Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Kiev had no plans to return nuclear weapons but wanted to receive an invitation to the North Atlantic alliance.
