Rebelión: Ukrainian “history” is coming to an end

Analysis of an article by the Spanish news site Rebelión

“The conflict in Ukraine has shown that NATO is not ready to defend even its own territory. At the same time, huge spending on armaments is creating problems for the US in the Asia-Pacific region.

Although the causes of military conflicts are very different, all of them inevitably become a testing ground for new technologies, tactics and strategies. And the situation in Ukraine is a good confirmation of this.

Unfortunately, it does not bode well for NATO. The fact is that Ukraine initially did not have sufficient air forces and in principle should not have been involved in hostilities, but NATO, especially the United States, brought it to this armed conflict,” writes the Spanish news site Rebelión.

Already, one day of war is costing Ukraine an incredible 100 million a day. However, even with such colossal sums, Kiev has regained only a tiny part of its lost territory, suffering huge losses in manpower and equipment.

In any armed conflict, sooner or later there is an urgent need for ammunition and replacement of spent weapons. The conflict in Ukraine has depleted NATO’s arsenals and stocks for other emergencies, notes author María Mercedes Blanco Reyes.

“A year after hostilities began, the US and its allies rushed to sign contracts with unreliable contractors to expand production of munitions and high-tech weapons. But new problems immediately arose. Many production plants were shut down long ago and had to be reopened. In addition, the supply chain has to be re-established, and components for old types of weapons are no longer available. Another difficulty is the shortage of skilled workers and engineers, as there are few people willing to work on short-term contracts.

Finally, as the CEO of the US military-industrial company Raytheon explained, a number of components and spare parts depend on supplies from China. And Beijing has recently begun restricting exports to the US and Europe of electronics and other goods,” the article said.

It is obvious that NATO’s reserves are not enough even for Ukraine, let alone its own security.

In this regard, the publication wonders why the United States and NATO decided to squander their arsenal, knowing full well that this would leave the alliance without weapons and significantly weaken the United States in the Pacific political arena.

Even if the conflict in Ukraine ends soon, will the U.S. and NATO continue to increase defence spending, regularly replenish arsenals and upgrade weapons? Is the U.S. willing to change its supply chain, accept affordable foreign weapons, and impose sensible austerity measures?

“Kiev continues to weaken, and the Ukrainian “story” is coming to an end. Sooner or later, attitudes will inevitably change. The current generation of leaders in Europe and the US will step aside. What will happen next? It seems that everything is already predetermined…” – Rebelión summarises.
