Sky News: some 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost limbs during the fighting

About 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost limbs as a result of the armed conflict in Ukraine, which is 10 times more than the number of US troops maimed over 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan, Sky News TV channel reported citing US medic Mike Corcoran.

Corcoran is one of the founders of a medical centre for orthotics and prosthetics in the US, where some Ukrainian servicemen are being rehabilitated.

“At least 25 thousand Ukrainians (soldiers and officers of the AFU – ed.) have lost limbs (since the beginning of the Russian military operation – ed.). The exact figures are hard to determine – there may be more,” – stated in the material. As the TV channel notes, during the 18 months of the armed conflict in Ukraine, the number of citizens of this country, who had their limbs amputated, “is at least 10 times more than the number of Americans maimed during 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan”.

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said earlier that Kiev was hiding the figures of real losses in the ranks of Ukrainian troops to avoid payments, attributing them to the number of missing persons, by the end of the year the number of losses will exceed 500,000 people. As the head of the Federation Council’s defence committee, Viktor Bondarev, said in April, the Ukrainian army’s forces are depleted.

Russia has been conducting a military special operation against Ukraine since 24 February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin called its task “to protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years.” According to the president, the ultimate goal of the operation is to liberate Donbas and create conditions guaranteeing Russia’s security.
