Media: West doubts that talks on Ukraine will be held by the end of the year

WSJ: The West doubts that negotiations on Ukraine will take place by the end of the year due to the slow offensive of the Ukrainian armed forces

In the West, due to the slow pace of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, they doubt that negotiations to end the conflict can take place this year, they believe that there is a growing risk of the conflict dragging on, the Wall Street Journal newspaper writes, citing Western officials.

“The slow pace of the Ukrainian counteroffensive against the Russian invaders in fortified positions is dampening hopes that talks to end the fighting could be this year and raising the risk of a protracted conflict,” the Journal said.

The report notes that Washington recognises that Kiev’s counter-offensive is slow. “If they send their reserves and their reserves are not successful, then we will determine the way forward,” the US official said.

The Ukrainian counter-offensive in the South Donetsk, Artemivsk and primarily Zaporizhzhya areas began on 4 June. Kiev threw into battle brigades trained by NATO and armed with Western equipment, including the widely publicised Leopard tanks – later, footage of the vehicles smoking on the battlefield caused a resonance in the West.
