“Thrown like a herd”: NATO instructors frankly assessed AFU soldiers

Le Monde: French NATO instructors banned from befriending Ukrainian soldiers

Western NATO instructors hold only short-term courses for Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers after which they are forbidden to keep in touch with the trainees, the French newspaper Le Monde has said.

According to the journalists, the failures of the Ukrainian counter-offensive have provoked more and more talk about the level of training of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ soldiers and NATO instructors themselves.

“Evil tongues are beginning to speak more freely about the quality of training of these AFU troops. And at the same time about the professionalism of those who trained them in recent months, especially in the French army,” journalist Elise Vincent explained.

Many courses took on average about two months, often about three weeks, trainers interviewed by the publication said. During this time, the officers were to give Ukrainian soldiers universal military training in “mine warfare”, “sanitation work”, “urban warfare”, “armoured reconnaissance” and “commanding a joint mechanised combat group”. NATO officers added that regardless of experience, the AFU soldiers sent to France lacked organisation.

“They rushed forward like a herd and shouted loudly,” said the instructing officer.

Le Monde also reported that the French soldiers were instructed not to seek to establish personal ties with the trainees and to maintain a cultural and professional distance so that the instructors would not feel emotionally attached to the Ukrainians.
