French president pointed to the need to start discussions to preserve stability in the region

French President Emmanuel Macron has discussed the situation in the Middle East and the security of maritime navigation in the region with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi by phone. This was reported by the Elysee Palace on Monday.

“During the conversation, the leaders were also able to discuss the situation in the Middle East. The president reiterated France’s commitment to the protection of safe and free navigation. The head of state pointed to the need to start a discussion to preserve stability and security in the region”, –  reads the communiqué distributed.

The United Kingdom, Israel, the United States, and Romania blame Iran for the July 30 night attack on the Liberian-registered chemical tanker Mercer Street. As a result of the incident, which occurred 280 km off the coast of Oman, two crew members, a Romanian citizen and a British citizen, were killed. London and Washington said they were consulting with allies to give a concerted response to the attack. Tehran’s version is that the accusations against it are politically motivated and unsubstantiated.
