The US decision to stop financing the World Health Organization is Washington’s irresponsible step and strategic mistake, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.
“The coronavirus is a common threat to the safety and health of the world for all. The undermining of WHO, a front-line organization in the fight against coronavirus, means weakening the joint international fight against this virus”, – said Rouhani, speaking at the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement on Monday in the format video conferencing. The performance was broadcast by Iranian television.
According to him, the decision of the United States is inappropriate and not amenable to any justification, however, the Iranian President noted that one should not expect otherwise from a country violating international agreements.
“The hasty and irresponsible decision of the US government to deprive WHO of the necessary funding should be considered as another strategic mistake made by them during the joint struggle of the whole world against coronavirus”, – Rouhani added.
In April, the US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of WHO funding. The Trump administration accuses the organization of not responding quickly to the outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19. At the same time, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not rule out that Washington would never restore the suspended funding of WHO.
