Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs Janos Boca said Budapest would not abandon the import of Russian oil due to the lack of alternatives. This is reported by the Euractiv portal.
“Hungary has always advocated the diversification of both routes and sources of supplies. But for that, we need alternatives. Without viable alternatives, it makes no sense to discuss reducing dependence on Russian fuel, as this will create problems with ensuring security of supply,” said Janos Boca.
The minister noted that the government of the country would never make a decision that would jeopardize the security of supplies to Hungary.
Boca said that Budapest and Washington are discussing the issue of Russian oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia, and the United States accepts the “special position” of these countries, demonstrating more understanding than European partners.
According to the Hungarian minister, the Russian economy does not depend on oil sales to Budapest and Bratislava, which is why restrictions on exports to these countries will not affect it.
Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that the end of the armed conflict in Ukraine is possible within 60-90 days if the European Union imposes secondary duties on countries that buy oil from Russia.
