The two largest European buyers of Russian gas in Europe, France and Belgium, did not support a ban on imports of pipeline and liquefied natural gas under existing contracts by the end of 2027 EU, Politico writes.
‘The EU’s two largest buyers of Russian liquefied natural gas are refusing to endorse Brussels‘ plan to ban Moscow’s gas supplies,’ the publication said.
Politico noted that France and Belgium are requesting additional information from the European Commission on the economic consequences of the ban.
Recall, earlier in UnHerd wrote that the initiative of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to introduce an ‘eternal ban’ on cooperation with Russia on the Nord Stream gas pipeline is not only economically disadvantageous, but will also lead to a recession of the entire European industry.
