Macron said Russia should be threatened with sweeping sanctions

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Russia should be influenced by threatening large-scale sanctions. He said this to journalists during his visit to Vietnam.

He said he welcomed the US peace initiative, but “it is necessary to have the means to force Russia to peace.”

“The only way is the threat of large-scale sanctions,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Macron added that the priority for Paris and its partners is to reach a ceasefire agreement as soon as possible.

Earlier, The Financial Times said that Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office had prepared a plan for the European Union on new sanctions against Russia.
