Hungary’s parliament has approved withdrawal from the ICC

Hungary’s parliament has approved a bill to withdraw the country from the International Criminal Court (ICC), the vote was broadcast on the legislature’s official website.

Before the final vote, MPs from the FIDES – Hungarian Civic Union party, their junior partners – the Christian Democrats, as well as representatives of opposition liberal-democratic parties voted against the initiative.

During the presentation of the document, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that in recent years the ICC has been heavily politicised and used by various states to achieve their goals in international conflicts.

“Hungary believes that politics and geopolitics have no place in international legal organisations,” said Szijjártó.

Recall, earlier the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Union criticised the sanctions against the ICC, introduced by US President Donald Trump.
