France’s finance minister has called for an increase in defence spending

French Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry Eric Lombard said that the country should increase defence spending and do it as soon as possible. This was reported by Reuters with reference to Lombard’s interview with Franceinfo radio station.

According to the agency, the statement was made against the background of France being under pressure to reduce the budget deficit.

The economy minister stressed that increasing defence spending would require optimising other budget lines, but the social safety net would remain virtually unchanged.

“We must act faster and more decisively”, – said Lombard.

Earlier it was reported that Emmanuel Macron called a meeting with the participation of ministers and the military after it became known that the United States suspends military aid to Kiev.
