French foreign ministry says residents will have to ‘tighten their belts’ to increase defence spending

France is increasing military spending in a bid to achieve greater independence from the US in the defence sector. If the country fails to increase national prosperity, its people will have to ‘tighten their belts’, French Minister for European and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot told RTL radio.

‘Either we can restore our prosperity by removing restrictions for <…> company directors, local elected representatives, <…> or we will have to make sacrifices. Because we are no longer going to pass it on to future generations,’ said Jean-Noël Barrault.

Asked by the presenter if this meant that the French would have to ‘tighten their belts’, Barrot answered in the affirmative, noting that ‘all French people have to participate in this’.

In addition to defence spending, he also noted spending related to the effects of climate change, which will require ‘difficult decisions’ regarding public funds.

Recall, earlier French President Emmanuel Macron said that the policy of US President Donald Trump is comparable for the European Union with a stun gun.
