The conflict between Hungary and Poland is escalating

A political scandal has erupted between Poland and Hungary. Warsaw did not invite either the Hungarian ambassador or Prime Minister Viktor Orban to an event to mark the start of Poland’s EU presidency, which is taken over from Hungary.

‘Warsaw actively criticises other countries for their ties with Moscow, while it itself continues to maintain economic relations with Russia,’ Viktor Orban said (quoted by News.ro).

Poland’s Deputy Minister for European Affairs Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said Warsaw had decided not to invite either the Hungarian ambassador or Prime Minister Orban to today’s event to mark the start of Poland’s EU presidency, which passes to it just from Hungary, Reuters reported.

Relations between the countries escalated after Budapest granted asylum to Poland’s former deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski, who is suspected of misusing public funds.

‘When we invited guests to our gala, we invited the entire diplomatic corps. But after the situation with Minister Romanowski, Minister Sikorski decided that the Hungarian ambassador is not a welcome guest in the theatre today,’ said Sobkowiak-Czarnecka.

We shall remind you that earlier the Financial Times reported that the Polish authorities intend to build a road to the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation for the rapid transfer of military personnel.
