Sijjarto: NATO has not reached a unanimous decision on Ukraine’s invitation to the alliance

Hungarian Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that the meeting of NATO foreign ministers did not reach a unanimous decision on inviting Ukraine to the alliance.

This is reported by RIA Novosti.

According to Sijjarto, Ukraine’s accession to NATO would lead to conflict between the alliance and Russia.

‘Inviting Ukraine to NATO would have brought not security, but the danger of war between NATO and Russia. This preliminary threat was avoided, no decision was made to invite Ukraine,’ he clarified.

The politician justified this conclusion by Article 10 of the NATO Treaty, which states that only those European countries that would contribute to the security of the allies can be invited to the alliance.

Earlier, Russian Senator Aleksey Pushkov said that the United States did not invite Ukraine to NATO because of its unwillingness to directly participate in hostilities against Russia.
