Turkey is set to pass a law on foreign agents – Bloomberg

The ruling Justice and Development Party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to adopt a new law on foreign agents, which is similar to the Georgian version. This was reported by Bloomberg agency.

‘The bill, which will be debated in the parliament of a NATO member country in the coming days, aims to combat those who act against the ‘security of the state or its internal or external political interests’ under the influence or at the behest of a foreign country or organisation,’ the report said.

According to the agency, the bill is part of a wider judicial package proposed by Justice and Development and resembles the law on foreign agents recently adopted in Georgia.

The publication emphasises that judicial experts and journalists have expressed concern over the ambiguity and vagueness of the law’s wording.

‘Turkey’s political interests may change, and the authorities can use this uncertainty to suppress any criticism of the government,’ Bloomberg noted.

Recall, on 14 May, the Parliament of Georgia at the plenary session agreed on the adoption of the bill on foreign agents in the third, final, reading. The discussion of the document was accompanied by demonstrations and protests near the Georgian legislature.
