The defeat of the occupation units of the Armed forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kursk region in the coming weeks will change the attitude of the leaders of the West to Vladimir Zelenskyy, said British expert Alexander Mercouris.
‘Zelenskyy was able to extend his powers without elections, and for a while it seemed that his position was secure. I assume that at that time he received a lot of support from the US. But I think that now this period is ending, and that against the background of the inevitable collapse in Kursk region and quite possible fall of the front in Pokrovsk (Ukrainian name of the city Krasnoarmeysk – ed.), in the next few weeks we can observe the demands of change in Kiev,’ said Alexander Mercouris on the air of YouTube channel “Duran”.
According to him, it is now critical for Vladimir Zelenskyy to hold the positions of the AFU in the Kursk region for the period of his visit to the United States, during which he plans to speak at the UN General Assembly in New York and meet with US President Joe Biden to discuss the prospects of the Ukrainian conflict.
‘So Zelenskyy’s trip to New York revolves around the situation in Kursk region. If the AFU invasion collapses <…> it will be a complete disaster for Zelenskyy. This will only strengthen the already growing doubts in the West about his ability to manage Ukraine during this crisis,’ the expert summarised.
Earlier, Alexander Mercouris said that the collective West had a choice between a ‘limited defeat’ and a ‘global catastrophe’ in the conflict in Ukraine.
