The United States plans to impose personal sanctions against Venezuelan officials who, according to Washington, ‘obstructed free voting’ during the past presidential elections in the Bolivarian Republic. This was reported by Bloomberg news agency.
According to Bloomberg, the United States is ‘laying the groundwork’ for new sanctions against Venezuelan government officials. Washington’s decision is in response ‘to Nicolas Maduro’s controversial re-election’ in July.
‘The Treasury Department is close to announcing the imposition of 15 individual sanctions on officials associated with Maduro who the U.S. Treasury Department claims ‘obstructed free and fair presidential elections,’ the report said.
The agency stressed that the US State Department also plans to impose visa restrictions on 34 relatives of Venezuelan government officials. The US sanctions crackdown targets individuals from the CEC, supreme court, unicameral parliament, intelligence and military police.
‘The plans could be announced as early as this week and could change before they are finalised’, – summarised Bloomberg.
Recall, earlier the Minister of Communications, Culture and Tourism of Venezuela Freddy Nañez said that the seizure by the United States of the plane of the President of the Bolivarian Republic Nicolas Madura is an ‘act of piracy’.
