Politico: EP urged to suspend Hungary’s participation in Schengen

A group of members of the European Parliament has called on the European Commission to suspend Hungary’s participation in Schengen because of the decision on visas for Russians, Politico writes.

As noted in the publication, the letter demanding action against Hungary was sent by Czech and Lithuanian MEPs Danusse Nerudova and Petras Auštryavicius.

In their opinion, Budapest’s decision allegedly “may jeopardise” the role of the Schengen area as a safe space.

The SMO members said that the EU should consider Hungary’s further membership in the Schengen zone if the country’s authorities do not change their policy.

Earlier, Michael Steubgen, interior minister of the state of Brandenburg in Germany, called for stronger controls on the border with Hungary.

The European Commission asked Budapest for explanations in connection with the easing of visa requirements for citizens of Russia and Belarus.
