Politico: Hungary vetoes EU statement on Venezuela elections

Hungarian authorities have opposed a joint EU statement on Venezuela’s presidential election results, Politico writes.

The publication refers to two officials. They said that the EU countries intended to release a joint statement, which stated concerns about alleged shortcomings and irregularities in the elections in Venezuela.

However, Hungary vetoed the document, the newspaper said.

As a result, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell made a statement on the matter in his own name only. He called for access to the voting protocols.

Earlier, Russian ambassador to Venezuela Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov called the non-recognition of the elections in the country by a number of countries as interference in the internal affairs of the state.

The Kremlin also called on the Venezuelan opposition to accept the defeat in the presidential election and accept the decision of the people of the country.
