US urges Modi to speak out in defence of Ukraine during his visit to Russia

The United States is concerned about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow and would like the Indian politician to speak clearly in Russia about “Ukraine’s sovereignty”, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller has said.

“We urge India, like any other country, to make clear during contacts with Russia that any settlement of the conflict in Ukraine must be in compliance with the UN Charter, the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Miller said, speaking to reporters.

The official reminded that India is a strategic partner of the United States, with which Washington is holding an honest dialogue, including expressing concern over its relations with Russia.

Narendra Modi earlier said that India was ready to help establish peace in Ukraine.
