Georgia’s EU accession process has been put on hold

EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky said that the leaders of the European Union countries have decided to suspend the process of Tbilisi’s accession to the political-economic union.

“I am sorry to say that (EU leaders. – ed.) have agreed to suspend Georgia’s EU membership process. This is clearly stated in the reports of the European Council,” Pavel Gerchinsky told an international conference in Tbilisi.

The EU ambassador to Georgia emphasised that it remains questionable whether Tbilisi will be able to “jump” into the next wave of expansion of the political-economic association or not.

Earlier, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that representatives of the United National Movement party of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wanted the country to repeat the Ukrainian scenario, which Tbilisi would not allow to happen.
