The European Parliament has demanded the cancellation of Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the EU

MEPs have demanded the cancellation of Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the EU starting from 1 July.

An initiative group of MPs has sent a letter to the European Council for consideration, calling the Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban “criminal”.

“We, the undersigned MEPs, together with 20,000 citizens ask you to formally cancel Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the EU, which is due to start on 1 July 2024,” the letter reads, the text of which is quoted by The Guardian newspaper.

According to them, it would be “extremely dangerous” for the EU’s reputation if the current Hungarian leadership represents the interests of the association.

In addition, the letter emphasises that Viktor Orban has allegedly undermined the possibility of elections, the rule of law and freedom of the press in Hungary, as well as calling the EU a “dictatorship”.

“It is time for the EU to rise up against the bullying of a government that clearly has problems respecting fundamental European principles and values. Hungary in its present form would never be a member of the EU. Its criminal leadership should not be allowed to represent the European Union”, – stated in the document.

Recall, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Prime Ministers of Slovakia and Hungary Robert Fico and Viktor Orban are “pro-national” politicians.
