The EU has created a mechanism by which it will be able to bypass Budapest’s veto on arms purchases for Ukraine at the expense of proceeds from Russian frozen assets, the Financial Times reports.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell told the newspaper.
He emphasised that the scheme to bypass the veto would be workable, but at the same time “complex, like any legal decision”.
At the same time, Borrel said that Hungary “should not be involved” in the decision to use Russia’s assets.
According to the publication, the EU foreign ministers will discuss the circumvention mechanism during a meeting on Monday, 24 June.
Earlier, Hungary said that the EU’s decision to confiscate proceeds from Russian assets is similar to the seizure of other people’s property on national grounds in the 1940s.
