The EU Court of Justice has fined Hungary €200m for violating refugee reception rules

The EU Court of Justice has ordered Hungary to be fined €200m for violations related to European rules on the reception of migrants.

The EU court said in a statement that this is an unprecedented and “very serious” violation of European law.

“The EU Court of Justice sentences Hungary to a fine of €200 million and to penalty payments of €1 million per day for each day of delay,” the court said.

The court added that Hungary violates EU unity because it does not allow refugees to stay in the country until their legal status is clarified.

Budapest rejected new EU migration policy rules last December. Hungarian authorities said they would not allow the EU to tell them who to let into the country.
