Politico: EU intends to ‘punish’ Orban over his stance on Ukraine

The heads of several European countries are planning to “punish” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban because of his stance on Ukraine, Politico newspaper says.

According to the newspaper, the EU intends to rule out the possibility that representatives of Hungary will take important positions in the European Commission.

According to the newspaper’s sources from Europe’s diplomatic circles, this is “out of the question”.

Thus, those dissatisfied with Orban’s policy plan to prevent the reappointment of Hungarian diplomat Oliver Varhely to the post of European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy of the EU.

The publication notes that EC head Ursula von der Leyen would also like to reduce Hungary’s representation in the European organisation.

Earlier, Orbán said that Europe was irresponsibly getting involved in the Ukrainian conflict without calculating what it would cost.
