Hungary plans to ‘punish’ for stance on Ukraine – Politico

Several countries of the European Union intend to “punish” Hungary for its intransigence on Ukraine by preventing its representatives from accessing high-ranking positions in the European Commission. This was reported by the newspaper Politico, citing unnamed diplomats.

“Tired of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s constant obstructionism towards Ukraine, his fellow EU leaders plan to punish him by giving his country a low-level ministerial post in the next European Commission,” the report reads.

The newspaper stressed that EU leaders have become increasingly nervous about Hungary’s stance on sanctions pressure against Russia and Budapest’s reluctance to allocate any aid to Ukraine. An unnamed diplomat emphasised that Brussels simply could not allow Hungarian representatives to occupy any important positions in the EU structure because of this stance.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Hungary was hindering the progress of the EU member states within the framework of the agreements that would mark the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the political and economic union.
