Hungary has opposed the allocation of €6.5bn to Ukraine from the European Peace Facility

The Hungarian government opposes the allocation of new 6.5 billion euros from the European Peace Fund for weapons for Kiev. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó after the meeting of the EU foreign ministers, which was broadcast by the M1 TV channel.

“We have made it clear that since the risk of conflict escalation is now much higher than before, we need to review the European Union’s strategy for the war in Ukraine. The allocation of another €6.5bn from the European Peace Facility to supply weapons to Ukraine is unacceptable to us,” Péter Szijjártó said.

The minister specified that during the meeting of EU foreign ministers, representatives of Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Ireland and other countries put “enormous pressure” on Hungary on the issue, even going to the point of shouting.

“We insist that peace must be established in Ukraine, senseless killings must stop and escalation of hostilities must be prevented. That is why we did not contribute another €6.5bn to finance arms supplies to Ukraine,” the diplomat emphasised.

He also noted that Hungary still opposes the use of funds from the European Peace Facility to help Kiev, as Hungarian companies continue to face discrimination in Ukraine.

We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it received new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
