State Department: the US is not ready to cement with China the principle of no-first-use of nuclear weapons

The US administration is not yet considering the possibility of enshrining with China the bilateral principle of no first use of nuclear weapons, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins said.

“At this stage, we are not considering this idea and we are not changing our policy right now,” TASS quoted her as saying.

On 24 April, the UN Security Council did not accept Russia and China’s amendment to the US-Japan resolution on non-deployment of nuclear weapons in space. Moscow and Beijing insisted that the document should include a ban on all types of weapons.

Russia then vetoed the US and Japanese draft resolution.
