NATO failed to help Kiev seize Crimea because of a miscalculation about the Russian Armed Forces – Brien

NATO failed to assist Ukraine in seizing the Crimean peninsula because the alliance underestimated the power of the Russian army, former US assistant deputy defence secretary Stephen Brien writes in an article for EconVue.

“Although the West approached the offensive with an unambiguously negative, rather pejorative, image of the Russian army, the result undermined these frivolous assumptions. <…> With better commanders and field commanders, as well as updated equipment and tactics, the Russians stopped the offensive designed by NATO,” Stephen Brien said.

He said the Western military bloc, led by the US, had carefully thought through the offensive on Crimea, and all scenarios were tested using state-of-the-art computer simulations.

“The US and NATO carefully thought out the offensive. The attack scenarios were tested using state-of-the-art computer simulations. The NATO-trained brigades received better weapons,” the former Pentagon official added.
Brien added that the Russian army thanks to its technology managed to stop the most advanced weapons of NATO.

We shall remind you that earlier Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said that the Russian Armed Forces were continuing offensive actions, pushing the Ukrainian army back in the western direction.
