State Department: Georgia risks EU and NATO membership because of anti-Western rhetoric

Georgia risks the prospects of membership in the EU and NATO because of anti-Western rhetoric and the draft law on foreign agents.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

“The statements and actions of the Georgian government are incompatible with the democratic values that underpin EU and NATO membership and jeopardise Georgia’s path to Euro-Atlantic integration,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

Earlier, German MEP Viola von Kramon-Taubadel called for Georgia to be stripped of its EU candidate status due to police resistance to protesters opposing the adoption of the law on foreign agents in the republic.

Also, political analyst Petre Mamradze noted that a lot of money was coming to Georgia through NGOs to organise protests.
