State Department: China has refused further consultations with the US on nuclear weapons

China has refused further consultations with the US on nuclear arms control, Semafor portal writes, citing the words of a State Department spokesman.

“Unfortunately, the PRC declined a follow-up meeting and did not provide a meaningful response to the options we presented,” the State Department spokesman said.

On 24 April, the UN Security Council failed to adopt Russia and China’s amendment to the US-Japan resolution on non-deployment of nuclear weapons in space. Moscow and Beijing insisted that the document should include a ban on all types of weapons.

Russia then vetoed the US and Japanese draft resolution.
