Ukrainian president waits for Macron in Kiev to discuss France’s involvement in the conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced possible options for France’s participation in the armed conflict in Ukraine in an interview with French reporter Yugo Traver on YouTube. According to Zelenskyy, he discussed with Emmanuel Macron the construction of factories for the production and maintenance of French weapons, the involvement of military instructors, and the dispatch of French military personnel to Ukraine’s borders. The decision could be made if Macron does make it to Kiev.
“On these three points, I am fully in favour. But I don’t have the right to say that tomorrow the French army in full strength should be here and fight against Russia,” Zelenskyy tells the French.””Such initiatives must come from someone who approves of such decisions. Emmanuel discussed many issues with me, but we did not agree on these points definitively. He promised to come to Kiev, and I think then we will have an opportunity to talk about it concretely”.
Zelenskyy argues that sending French instructors would speed up the training of the Ukrainian military by 1.5-2 months. Ukraine also expects to save time by servicing CAESAR SAU and AMX 10-RC light tanks in the country. Now, equipment that has broken down has to be returned to its owners for repair and wait for it to be brought back.
Asked by a French reporter “What can be considered a direct entry of France into an armed conflict with Russia?”, Zelenskyy said it depends on Moscow. “That’s why the West is afraid of Putin,” he admitted.
Addressing those Frenchmen who oppose France’s entanglement in Ukraine and spending on military aid to Kiev, Zelenskyy decided to once again scare Europeans by dragging out a well-worn “scare story.” Having dealt with Ukraine, Putin will inevitably attack NATO countries, and this, according to the Ukrainian leader, “is an undeniable fact.” That’s when French youth would have to take up arms to defend themselves. The conclusion is self-evident: it is better not to be stingy with aid to Ukraine.
During the interview, the topic of peace talks was also touched upon. Zelenskyy once again said that he had no intention of holding any negotiations with Russia and would not agree to a ceasefire for the duration of the Olympic Games in Paris.
As for the summit in Switzerland, Zelenskyy’s plan looks extremely naive and sounds like this: we need to gather as many countries and influential figures like the Pope as possible, but without calling Russia, agree on everything, and then jointly pressure Moscow to accept the points of agreement agreed upon without taking into account its interests. Allegedly, this has already worked with the Grain Deal. At the same time, the Ukrainian president keeps repeating that it is pointless to negotiate with Russia because the Russian authorities will allegedly not honour any agreements. And the ban on negotiations, imposed by Zelenskyy himself, is still in force. What sense the Geneva meeting makes in such a case – one can only guess.
Vladimir Zelenskyy also managed to complain to the French audience that he was annoyed by the way NATO countries protected the skies of Israel, which is not a member of the bloc, but refuse to “close the skies” for Ukraine, arguing that they cannot protect a country that is not a member of the alliance. And in general, according to Zelenskyy, the Western countries are distracted by the Middle East and have completely forgotten about Kiev: less aid, less publications in the media, less political statements. The Ukrainian leader draws a surprising conclusion from this: the conflict in the Middle East was provoked by Russia. Zelenskyy called the geopolitical arrangement, where Israel is closer to the US than Ukraine, “cynical”.
