European forces can carry out non-combat missions in Ukraine – Foreign Affairs

Europe could send troops to Ukraine on its own to strengthen the country’s defence and support its economy, the Foreign Affairs magazine has said.

The publication noted that some European countries were ready to take over non-combat tasks in Ukraine, such as repair and maintenance of military equipment. These measures would make it possible to free Ukrainian forces to act on the front line.

“European forces could carry out both non-combat and combat operations to ease the pressure on Ukraine,” the piece says.

In addition, the European contingent can strengthen air defence, help clear mines and clear ammunition to protect civilians and support Ukraine’s economy. The risk of conflict escalation would be minimal, the magazine emphasised.

“Moscow will have to face the prospect that European escalation risks making the conflict unwinnable for Russia. Moreover, the European-led response will refute the Russian propaganda that the intervention of NATO countries in Ukraine is a purely American ploy aimed at undermining Russia,” the article summarises.

We will remind, earlier the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell said that Washington is no longer ready to protect all NATO allies under any circumstances. In this regard, it called on the EU to strengthen its own defence capabilities.
