The US became the main buyer of Russian uranium in 2023

The US bought a record amount of Russian uranium in 2023, according to RIA Novosti calculations based on data from the national statistical services.

According to published data, the US increased imports of Russian uranium by 19% to 702 tonnes in 2023. Deliveries to China, on the contrary, decreased by 32% to 457 tonnes. Thus, the United States has moved to the first place in the world in terms of imports of Russian nuclear fuel.

South Korea moved up to third place, importing 243 tonnes of uranium, 1.8 times the 2022 figure. The top five also included France, which reduced imports by 29% to 223 tonnes, and Kazakhstan, which increased imports fivefold to 168 tonnes, according to the report.

In addition, Germany purchased 30 tonnes of Russian uranium, and a new country in the ranking is Brazil, which purchased 27 tonnes of nuclear fuel in 2023. The Netherlands last year enriched uranium from Russia did not buy, although in 2022 the volume of Russian supplies amounted to 72 tonnes, indicated in the calculations of RIA Novosti.
